After five years of development, including a successful Kickstarter campaign in June 2012 and more than a year on Steam Early Access, Goldhawk Interactive finally released Xenonauts on Steam on June 16, 2014. It features all of the same major systems and gameplay with a few careful enhancements. For a start, the setting has moved from overtly 90s-styled near-future sci-fi to an alien invasion in the midst of the Cold War, and with that comes a more subdued palette and a more military-realistic look. You only need the ones the game tells you to capture, and in addition it's useful to capture one alien from each race for various research bonuses, but that's it. Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. To be fair, only large/massive ships will attack your base. Stun batons are by far the most effective, and dangerous, way of capturing aliens, but there's sadly no advantage to capturing more aliens. You were supposed to have to repair base buildings that take significant damage, but that's not the case, even though you will see some aliens try and damage key items. This means that having enough airborne torpedoes, or enough ground-based AA, stops an attack before it happens. There's no way to know how many to expect - it depends on how many UFOs spawn (which depends on how well you're doing), and of course they will only attack your base if you don't shoot the UFO down first.Īs long as you don't lose the base entirely, it will remain undamaged.
